Moxibustion is an externally applied Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment using a Chinese herb called Moxa (Artemisia argyi), commonly known as ‘Mugwort’.
For external use, the Moxa is compressed and rolled into cigar-shaped herbal sticks which are then lit and held over acupuncture points. The radiant heat produced has the effect of stimulating the point.
According to TCM theory, moxa has a tonifying and warming effect which promotes movement and activity. To turn baby from breech to head down, this warming and raising effect is utilised to encourage the baby to become more active and lift its bottom up in order to gain adequate momentum to summersault into the head down position.
While the majority of breech babies turn spontaneously before birth, the longer a baby stays in the breech position with conditions becoming more cramped, the less likely it will be to turn of its own volition.
This treatment will comprise of a 1 hour session to teach you, and birth partner if you wish, how to use Moxa safely and correctly. You will then complete the treatments as recommended, generally twice a day for 5 days. Telephone follow up and the moxa sticks are also included in the package.
Acupuncture is also an option to encourage baby to turn.
